Sponsorship applications are thoroughly scrutinized by immigration officers to determine the genuineness of the application. More often than not, applicants include supporting letters or personal statements to talk about their relationship and demonstrate to the immigration officer that indeed their relationship is genuine. Even though a personal statement is not mandatory, writing one may increase the likelihood of your spouse being accepted into Canada.
You can choose to omit information that you find unnecessary in the supporting letter and the immigration officer will not consider it. However, immigration officers do not fill in the blanks for you. They will only review your application based on the information that has been presented to them. If you do not put solid arguments in your supporting letter, you lose an opportunity to demonstrate the genuineness of your application.
You may want to include the following items when drafting your letter:
– Start with an overview of the areas that you intend to discuss about your relationship. For instance, who you are to each other, where and when you met and how your relationship has progressed over time.
– Go ahead to describe how the relationship started. For instance, if you met online or through a mutual friend, explain the details of your first date and what attracted you to him/her.
– Talk about how often you’ve been communicating. If you used to speak often on phone, via Skype or email, explain this in your letter.
– Describe how the relationship has progressed over time. For instance, if you have attended special occasions together it would be nice to mention them in the letter. Describe a few memorable moments of your relationship.
– Describe things you have done together while being very specific on the dates, where and when. For instance, if you went on a trip together, describe how long this was after you had met and how you enjoyed your time with him/her.
– Talk about what you like most about your spouse. What are some of the things you have in common? Are there any strong qualities that attracted you to your spouse?
– Talk about the relationship that your spouse has with other people in your circles such as your family members, friends and even children. Discuss how they met in detail and how his/her relationship has evolved with the people who matter to you most.
– How did you know that your spouse was the one? Describe this in detail. You can talk about your proposal and who wanted to make the relationship official first. Describe the experience in your relationship so far.
– If there was a wedding ceremony, provide more details regarding it. For instance, share information about the venue, who attended and why it was a memorable experience for both of you.
– You may wish to end the letter with what you plan on achieving together.
This information will give the immigration officer proof of the genuineness of your relationship.
