A Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) is a travel document allowing people who are inadmissible to Canadato visit the country on a short-term basis.
A Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) is an official document placed in your passport proving you have met the requirements to enter Canada as a temporary resident. Categories include Super visas, Diplomatic and official visas, Courtesy visas, and Facilitation visas.
Anyone who is otherwise inadmissible to Canada.
Anyone who is not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident requires a TRV, unless they have a visa exemption (check here). TRVs are issued for students, workers, and visitors.

- Your refugee claim was denied in the last 12 months
- You are eligible for a Pre-Removal Risk Assessment (“PRRA”)
- You are a permanent resident or citizen of Canada
In advance at a visa office in your country, or at a Point of Entry (border crossing, airport, etc.)
You must apply for a TRV prior to arriving in Canada; you cannot apply for one at a Point of Entry.

TRPs may be valid from anywhere between 1 day and 3 years.
TRVs may be valid for up to 10 years.
